Director’s
Corner. By Tom Lizotte 04/14/2009
It
has been a busy spring
Things
have been very busy during the late winter and spring for the Cape Elizabeth
High School
music department, and it has been a time of great accomplishment for our
students.
As
recounted elsewhere, it was a wonderful state jazz festival for our students.
Ralph Norris and
I were extremely pleased with the performances of each of the Cape groups that
participated in the state
jazz festival.
The
goal is always to be at our best at this event and to have the students be
pleased with their
performances. This goal was achieved. It was wonderful to see the
community support for our students.
The commute was just a little more convenient than Millinocket!
Following
these events, the concert bands and choruses had an excellent concert at Cape
in
March. It is always so good to get the opportunity to play after several
months of preparation. Many
of you expressed thoughts that you love to see the improvement the groups make
concert to concert,
and this is appreciated.
This
validates the hard work the students put in on a daily basis.
The
third major event has been the Jazz Cabaret, which occurred in early April.
For me this
event is always bittersweet. It is the culmination of our jazz season,
so the groups are at their best.
But…it is also the conclusion of the high school jazz career for our
seniors. It is a fantastic senior jazz
class. They have been enthusiastic, hardworking and dedicated from their first
days at the school,
and they will be missed.
The
other great thing about Cabaret is that it is a continuum. You can trace the
development
from the freshman/sophomore jazz ensemble all the way to Combo 1 and the
Concert Jazz Ensemble.
It is inspiring to see what hard work and four years of development can
produce.
We
are now in the final stages of this year. There are band and choral concerts
in May,
graduation and a final concert in June for the Symphony Band.
Where
does the time go?
