Jazz staff profiles

The staff assisting with the Cape Elizabeth High School jazz program is among the most seasoned
and accomplished in this part of the country.  This is the jazz faculty:

Ralph Norris has been an active professional saxophonist for the past 50-plus years. He is a retired
civil engineer who lives in Falmouth. For many years he was a member of the Don Doane and Terry White
big bands and has recorded with pianist Tom Snow. He has been with the Cape jazz program since 1997.
He conducts the Tuesday, Thursday and Cannonball Adderley combos. In addition to conducting the
ensembles, he writes most of the music for his groups.  Ralph's specialty is the great American Songbook,
as he calls it. Under his guidance, the Cape groups have established and maintained a tradition of excellence.

Terry White, director of bands at Cape Elizabeth Middle School, is the composer/arranger in residence.
A veteran of 30 years in education, he attended Berklee College of Music and the University of New
Hampshire. For many years he had his own professional big band.  Terry is a published composer/arranger
for the Aldred Publishing Co. One of his original compositions, "Past My Bedtime," was recently performed
at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, the largest of its kind in  the world.

Richard Marsters, who assists with the Concert Jazz Ensemble, is a professional trumpeter, singer, flute
player and band leader. A native of Westbrook, he is a former student of Terry White.  After a stint in the
U.S.Navy band program he attended the University of Southern Maine. His specialty is jazz improvisation.
Since 1997 he has conducted Cape combos as well as  the former Monday Evening Jazz Ensemble.

Mark Tipton is a professional trumpet player who attended South Portland schools, Interlocken Arts Academy
and several colleges. He has his Master's in classical trumpet performance. Mark maintains an active performing
and teaching schedule. He is in his third year assisting Tom Lizotte with the Repertory Jazz Ensemble.

Ensemble. He is a local attorney and professional bass player who studied at the New England Conservatory
of Music. Sam’s son, Dylan, was an all-state tenor player in the CEHS jazz program and is currently performing
with the jazz ensemble at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Chris Marro is a graduate of South Portland High School, freelance percussionist and co-owner of Midcoast
