ELIZABETH HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC BOOSTERS
The Cape Elizabeth Music Boosters is a nonprofit
corporation. Its purpose is to
promote the music programs in the Cape Elizabeth High School by providing
assistance, encouragement and both financial and non-financial support. Our
membership is open to anyone who desires to support the music programs.

Q: What extra-curricular groups
are available to instrumentalists?
A: In this area, Portland Youth Wind Ensemble (PYWE) and
Portland Youth
Symphony Orchestra (PYSO).
We have had many students participate in these groups
in the past.
We strongly support
these programs, in that they offer a quality
experience and help
make our groups better.
Admission is by auditions, which occur in the spring.
Q: I am looking for a private teacher for my child. What do I do?
A: Contact Tom Lizotte at tom_lizotte@cape.k12.me.us
Some teachers will come
to the school or your home. Private
instruction is strongly
encouraged.

Our new Choral
Director, Paul McGovern, also teaches at Portland High School where he directs the band and teaches piano, guitar, and music appreciation classes. Paul has conducted and sung with several choral ensembles in the area. He currently serves as Music Director of the Granite State Choral Society based in Rochester, NH and as Chorus Master for PORTopera. He has previously taught and directed choirs at Saint Joseph's College, the Crane School of Music at SUNY-Potsdam, and Georgia Southern University. Paul received his masters and doctoral degrees in Choral Conducting from Indiana University. Before graduate school, he taught music in public schools in the Philadelphia, PA area for six years. |

Tom
Lizotte, Director of Bands
at CEHS, is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He has taught high school in Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Florida. Former President of the Maine Band Directors Association, he has also served on the International Association of Jazz Educators Massachusetts unit executive board and on the boards of the New England Scholastic Band Association and the Massachusetts Instrumental Conductors Association. He is a member of the Massachusetts Drum Corp Hall of Fame. |

Jazz staff
profiles
The staff assisting with the Cape Elizabeth High School
jazz program is among the most seasoned
and accomplished in this part of the country. This is the jazz faculty:
Ralph
Norris has been an active professional saxophonist for the past 50-plus
years. He is a retired
civil engineer who lives in Falmouth. For many years he was a member of the Don
Doane and Terry White
big bands and has recorded with pianist Tom Snow. He has been with the Cape jazz
program since 1997.
He conducts the Tuesday, Thursday and Cannonball Adderley combos. In addition to
conducting the
ensembles, he writes most of the music for his groups.
Ralph's specialty is the great American Songbook,
as he calls it. Under his guidance, the Cape groups have established and
maintained a tradition of excellence.
Terry
White, director of bands at Cape Elizabeth Middle School, is the
composer/arranger in residence.
A veteran of 30 years in education, he attended Berklee College of Music and the
University of New
Hampshire. For many years he had his own professional big band. Terry is a
published composer/arranger
for the Aldred Publishing Co. One of his original compositions, "Past My
Bedtime," was recently performed
at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, the largest of its kind in the
world.
Richard
Marsters, who assists with the Concert Jazz Ensemble, is a professional
trumpeter, singer, flute
player and band leader. A native of Westbrook, he is a former student of Terry
White. After a stint in the
U.S.Navy band program he attended the University of Southern Maine. His
specialty is jazz improvisation.
Since 1997 he has conducted Cape combos as well as the
former Monday Evening Jazz Ensemble.
Mark
Tipton is a professional trumpet player who attended South Portland
schools, Interlocken Arts Academy
and several colleges. He has his Master's in classical trumpet performance. Mark
maintains an active performing
and teaching schedule. He is in his third year assisting Tom Lizotte with the
Repertory Jazz Ensemble.
Brian
Graham is a recent graduate of the University of Maine music program. At
USM he studied saxophone.
Brian is a professional teacher as
well as a performer/composer for the
Portland fusion group Sli Chi. He is in
his second year as Tom's assistant with the Tuesday Evening Jazz Ensemble.
Sam
Sherry is a dedicated volunteer who assists Ralph Norris with the combos
and with the Concert Jazz
Ensemble. He is a local attorney and professional bass player who studied at the
New England Conservatory
of Music. Sam’s son, Dylan, was an all-state tenor player in the CEHS jazz
program and is currently performing
with the jazz ensemble at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Chris
Marro is a graduate of South Portland High School, freelance
percussionist and co-owner of Midcoast
Music in Portland. Chris has taught percussion to the Cape jazz bands since
2004.
